Life Ever-Flourishing

Following the veins of the mountains and wilderness, we rediscover our longing for “life.”Nestled deep within the rolling hills of Liuyang, China, Yunxi Valley sits quietly beside the raw mountain wilderness of the Zhouluo Grand Canyon. On our first visit, we were moved by the lush, tiered peaks at its back and the natural rhythm of the land as it unfolded along the contours of the terrain. All around are forests or terraced fields, winding along the valley’s contour lines—each view unique—where mountains, valleys, streams, and woods weave together into a seamless tapestry of wild beauty. What struck us most about this land is that it does not exist to astonish you, but to embrace you. This is the distinctive gentleness and depth of Zhouluo in Liuyang. Looking back at our lives, in this age of high-speed motion, our subtle perception of “being alive” has dulled; what we pursue now is merely a high-quality way of “living.” When efficiency becomes the measure, we grow accustomed to seeing nature only through screens, and life becomes segmented schedules rather than lived experiences. Moving through these linear pipelines of survival, we unconsciously neglect self-acceptance, forget where our food truly comes from, and drift away from the primal warmth between our bodies and the earth, wind, and sunlight. When we deconstruct the word “life,” what do you see? Sheng is the awareness of existence; Huo is the stillness of mere survival. Thus, centering on the reconstruction of “life,” we documented this transformation deep within the canyon. The endeavor of Yunxi Valley is an answer to this long-missed yearning. We have no desire to conquer or reshape nature; instead, with philosophical intent, we return architecture to being part of the land—allowing it to breathe along the contour lines like the plants of the mountain, shifting with the seasons. This is both a return to aesthetics and a restoration of humanity. We preserve the weathered traces of the old residence to give memory a vessel; we release the tension of new structures to offer the soul a place to rest. Here, life is not a grand abstraction, but a tangible act: mending a disturbed patch of soil, waiting for a beam of light to pass through a French window, allowing life to rediscover its rhythm in harmony with the heavens and the earth. This is our understanding of “life ever-flourishing”—not a savage expansion, but a quiet growth.

    Chapter One|The Foundation of Life

Architecture never interrupts the rise and fall of the mountains; it lies upon the slopes like vines creeping along the hillside. In the first phase of Yunxi Valley, the buildings cascade along the contours of the mountain, like native trees resting on terraces at different elevations. Each structure’s height directly converses with the undulating terrain and terraced fields. From hand-drawn contour analyses to post-completion aerial views, the entire complex appears as a natural breath of the mountain, its form seamlessly aligned with the texture of the land. This is more than physical integration—it is an acceptance and dialogue of energy flow.

The first dialogue of “life”: architecture and the land breathing in unison.Architecture is order grown from the landform. There is no imposed form—only the tactile sensation of the mountain’s rise and fall. Confronted with sloping terrain, we avoided large-scale leveling or excavation, choosing instead to use contour lines as the primal language of design. Our aim was to prevent the buildings from becoming alien objects on the mountain, allowing them instead to sprawl like vines along the ridge’s natural outline. The old residence was restored faithfully to its original state, while adjacent new structures formed a connected lineage with it. The forecourt platforms emerge from steep rock faces, elevated by tall stilts so that rain and mountain winds can pass freely beneath. These independent point foundations replaced extensive excavation, preserving the original soil infiltration pathways. Terraces step down along the contour lines, resolving elevation changes while leaving gaps for small plants and insects.

    Chapter Two|The Breath of Life

A loose connection allows sightlines and airflow to penetrate, transforming enclosed units into a breathing community. The initial cluster consists of the Bilinlang Club, boutique hotel, Jiang Family Old House, and supporting dining facilities, linked orderly along the mid-slope of the ridge. Key design challenges emerged: How to establish spatial order among scattered units? How to balance heritage and modernity in connecting old and new structures? How to ensure smooth experiential flow across diverse programs? How to harmonize room views with façade relationships? How to achieve symbiotic breathing between architecture, people, and nature?

▼建筑与环境之间的对话,the dialogue between the building and the environment © 肖湘·廖鲁

Thus, faced with dispersed existing buildings and complex elevation changes, we adopted a weaving strategy, linking independent functional modules into a continuous pedestrian system. The second dialogue of “life”: here, architecture is seen as a tool to modulate the distance and breath between humans and nature. The clubhouse volume extends laterally from the outline of the old foundation like branches, its steel-and-glass lightness contrasting with the weight of the old eaves. A deliberate gap between them makes the fault line of time clearly visible.

The stone and water features in the forecourt are not confined to traditional garden ornamentation, but extend as part of the native landscape directly into the building’s base. Intentionally blurring indoor-outdoor level differences, the floors inside and out are nearly flush, erasing physical barriers. The relationship between windows and walls is redefined: windows are no longer mere frames on a façade, but breathing interfaces through which people exchange breath with the Zhouluo Canyon, adjusting their proximity to nature.

The properties of modern framing allow us to dissolve visual boundaries and create crisply framed views, drawing mountain breezes, drifting clouds, and forest seas into the interior. By constructing such极致 channels for landscape flow, people rediscover their rhythmic breathing in harmony with nature.

    Chapter Three|Growth Rings of Life

The old house serves as the growth ring to which new spaces attach; it defines the origin of the site, making subsequent additions a natural extension rather than a forced overlay. The foundation of the old house on site is a seed left behind by time. We intentionally preserved this visual node along the path to the club, ensuring that visitors first pass by the old dwelling.

That familiar roofline is not only the prototype of Zhouluo’s indigenous homes, but also the physical vessel of local cultural memory. As this growth ring extends both forward and backward in time, the newly built hotel is no longer an isolated intruder, but gains flesh and bone to lean upon. The third dialogue of “life”: a conversation between past and present, solidified within coexisting growth rings.

Confronted with these remnants, we chose not to demolish and start over, but to graft new life onto the old framework with something akin to archaeological patience. Exposed wooden beams and daylight openings become the growth rings to which the new space clings—anchoring the site’s origin, like the first ring of a tree, so that later additions feel inevitable rather than imposed.

This is a vein of growth rooted in memory. New and old permeate each other along the axis of time: the beams and columns of the old house uphold the dignity of space, while the functions of the new club and stainless steel infill bridge the gaps of years. Light passes through tall windows, brushing against restored walls and brand-new floors, physically illuminating the strata of time.

▼保留了老屋的梁柱,the beams and columns of the old house has been restored © 肖湘·廖鲁

Most importantly, the functional layout and spatial form of the old house are anchored in past life patterns. Passing through the central hall’s doorway feels like facing a mirror of inner calm. Here, one is both observer of history and participant in the present. The roughness of the old and the renewed textures resonate in the same space, ultimately condensing into a habitable growth ring.

    Chapter Four|The Texture of Life

We caution against reducing the texture of life to a mere pile or replica of aged materials. True texture resides not only in the tactile surface, but deeply within the order of spatial form and the flow of scenes—a temperature readable only when the body is present. The seasonal withering and flourishing in the old courtyard is the most vivid continuation of the building’s living texture. In winter, the wooden gate draws the side courtyard inward like a shell. The thick wall foundation insulates, keeping the courtyard at a constant temperature amid the stark landscape.

The biting air stays outside the lattice, while warm indoor light casts low-color-temperature silhouettes on the bluestone slabs. Wood grain appears denser in the cold, its touch conveying warmth that sharply contrasts the bleak outdoors. Sitting quietly beneath the eaves, one finds a tranquil reassurance, securely held by the structure.

▼屋顶的木质纹理,wood grain appears on the roof © 肖湘·廖鲁

After the spring rains, the courtyard becomes a buffer zone exchanging energy with the external ecology. The gate opens, letting fresh vines and damp breezes seep into the established spatial order. The mood lies in the interplay between framing and breaking the view—the precise lines of the old wooden windows cut the picture, while unrestrained greenery softens those edges. This tenuous infiltration turns the inner court into the perfect medium linking dwelling and nature.

▼框景与破景的博弈,the interplay between framing and breaking the view © 肖湘·廖鲁

In midsummer, the courtyard becomes a canopy of deep shade. Dense foliage casts heavy shadows over the eaves, filtering harsh sunlight into gentle diffusion. The thick walls absorb daytime heat, releasing dry warmth after nightfall. Air flows between beams and stone steps; each cooling sensation perceived by skin is the architecture’s intelligent response to climate. Hidden behind this dark filter, one reconciles body and summer in absolute stillness.

The restaurant’s design captures the textural scene of returning home at dusk, as depicted in poetry. Lowering the eaves alters the tactile visual experience of seating areas; the transition from rough stone slabs to warm wood guides the body toward the implied ritual of coming home to dine.

The verbs described in these poems are the texture we wish to express—physical imprints left when the soul is touched. Like a tactile map guiding the body into stillness, they unfold gradually in space. Sitting beneath the eaves, pushing open a wooden window, a relaxed yet alert sense of presence quietly arises.

    Final Chapter|Life in Symbiosis

This is not merely the creation of space, but a flow of life energy. When design recedes into the landscape, only the outline of the mountains, the play of light and shadow, and the harvest within remain in coexistence. At Yunxi Valley, “life” is not a noun or a static state—it is an ongoing dynamic process. Life is architecture growing in harmony with terrain, time extending into the present, scenery merging into the fabric of daily life, and the soul growing toward inner peace.

We aim beyond building a hotel or dwelling; we seek to create a field where life energy flows naturally and breathes freely. When design quietly withdraws into the background, yielding to the contours of the mountains, the traces of shifting light, the gentle movement of the wind, and the faintest tremor within—this is what we understand and practice as life in symbiosis. This thread of growth, sprouting from deep within the earth, waits silently in the valley for people to arrive.
