In Shanghai, the pulse of urban regeneration is quietly extending from the waterfront and historic districts to everyday neighborhood street corners. Located near the city’s Middle Ring Road, Yizhou Road and Quanzhou Road once formed a part of the city that felt “not very Shanghai” at all. Despite a high ratio of greenery, a unique demographic—80% commuters and only 20% permanent residents—resulted in a streetscape that was rough and lackng in texture. Problems such as haphazard parking, cramped sidewalks, and speeding vehicles made the area feel urban yet hardly a place to call home.

Designed by Liu Yuyang Architects (with the Quanzhou Road section in collaboration with FLIP Design Studio), these two streets have undergone a delicate transformation from mere “passageways” into genuine “places for living.” As a demonstration project for the Hongmei Subdistrict’s “15-minute community life circle,” this micro-regeneration not only reshapes physical space but also seeks a balance between the fast-paced rhythms of a development zone and the slower, more intimate feel of a community.

Yizhou Road: Widening the Pedestrian Realm, Reordering Linear Space

The challenge on Yizhou Road was to improve chaotic traffic and a cramped pedestrian experience without altering the two-way traffic flow. The design team employed a highly targeted strategy of “addition and subtraction.” By widening the sidewalk on one side, the generous urban space across the intersection was drawn into the northern entrance, relieving the original sense of compression. At the same time, curbside temporary parking was reorganized to meet essential needs while reducing interference with moving traffic. In the details, the renovation of the boundary walls employs restrained interventions—replacing structural members and updating finishes—while the color and texture of the pavement emphasize coherence and a rhythmic, sequential order. The red plum blossom paving motif, embedded into the ground, has become a distinctive emblem of the community.

More subtly, the design uses minute variations in the road cross-section—such as localized curved narrowing and material transitions—to create a “soft intervention” on vehicle speeds. Cars naturally decelerate as they enter, while pedestrians, when traffic is absent, can experience the street’s relaxed atmosphere. This suggestive approach, avoiding physical bollards, demonstrates a respect for urban space users.

Quanzhou Road: The Plum Blossom as a Leitmotif, Weaving Seasonal Social Nodes

If Yizhou Road resolves the tension between linear traffic and pedestrian movement, Quanzhou Road is dedicated to creating a “social space at the street corner.” As the core segment of the community hub, Quanzhou Road takes the plum blossom as its design theme, using a red-toned palette to express the revitalizing force of urban renewal—blooming like plum flowers against the winter chill.

The entire street is organized along a seasonal timeline, linking different functional nodes: the community center plaza, the kindergarten drop-off and waiting plaza, and the neighborhood hub’s rest plaza. At the street corner opposite the kindergarten, a sculptural and playful landscape installation stands out. Not a pure children’s play structure, it draws inspiration from kindergarten elements, offering a vibrant corner for parents picking up their children and nearby residents to sit, play, and linger.

At the community center plaza, the paving uses green pebble-dashed concrete (water-brushed stone), which is easier to maintain than a lawn. The floating tree planters, raised slightly above the ground, serve both as growing spaces for trees and as seating ledges.
In the “Play & View Plaza,” hollow walls are constructed from square concrete blocks. Within the activity space of beige terrazzo and gravel paving, scattered landscape features in various colors punctuate the ground.

Facing practical constraints such as a large existing staircase to an underground garage and immovable utility manholes, the design team demonstrated remarkable integrative skill. The curved tree planters in Quanzhou Road Plaza carry forward the team’s research from the Yangpu Riverfront, with heights tailored to accommodate both adults and children. Furthermore, the integration of steps with ramps, and seating with landscape features, transforms previously negative spaces into richly layered, sculptural, and inviting places.

From “Rough” to “Refined”: An Elevation of Design Authority

The deeper significance of this regeneration lies in the architects’ proactive definition of the project brief. As Liu Yuyang notes, through in-depth discussions with the subdistrict authorities, the design team was able to elevate the architect’s role in urban design and decision-making. The process was not without its twists and turns, but the eventual approval reflects the necessary condition for micro-regeneration: mutual understanding.

The resulting Quanzhou Road and Yizhou Road are no longer mere conduits between destinations; they are everyday places imbued with a genuine sense of belonging. Through refined materials, carefully considered cross-sections, and imaginative nodes, they respond to the real needs of a community where “commuters far outnumber residents”—ensuring that even those rushing by can, at the next corner, still feel the warmth that everyday public life deserves.
