    “Before” the “Rock”

The project is located in Yanqian Village, Duanzhou District, Zhaoqing City. The village derives its name from its geographical location: situated in the northern part of Chengdong Subdistrict, it is bordered by Xinghu Lake to the south and west and adjoins the Qixingyan Scenic Area to the north. As the village lies in front of (to the south of) the Qixingyan Scenic Area, it is called “Yanqian.” This naming convention also intuitively reflects the village’s geographical relationship with the Qixingyan Scenic Area—specifically, its position “in front of” (“qian”) the “cliffs” (“yan”).

The Qixingyan Scenic Area as Seen from Yanqian Village ©微介设计

The Yanqian Cloud Path is situated on Xianggang Hill in Yanqian Village, connecting the western and northern mountain entrances of Yanqian and facing the Qixingyan Scenic Area. The Qixingyan Scenic Area features a typical karst landscape, characterized by its rock peaks and lakes. The main scenic area consists of seven limestone peaks arranged in the pattern of the Big Dipper. It served as a filming location for the 1986 TV series <Journey to the West> and is a national 5A-level tourist attraction, hailed as the “Number One Wonder of Lingnan.” From the vantage point of Xianggang Mountain, classic vistas of Qixingyan—including its seven unique peaks and the Wulong Pavilion—are all within view.

Before construction, Xianggang Mountain was a small, barren hill that few people ventured onto because it was home to many “immortals.” The overall design adheres to the principles of prioritizing ancient trees, “immortals,” visual alignment, ecology, disaster prevention, and aesthetics. A transparent, lightweight steel structure appears to float atop the hill, “gently touching” the forest in the most delicate manner. The development of the Yanqian Cloud Path is not merely a transportation or tourism facility; it is a pivotal node for driving the deep integration of the region’s “city-rural-scenic” elements.

    The Nature of Geometry

In terms of spatial design, nature is deconstructed and reconstructed through rational geometric order, allowing it to take on new forms within a controlled, rational framework. This transforms the beauty of nature from chaos to clarity, from “spontaneity” to “manifestation.” The design of Yanqian Yundao is a vivid embodiment of this concept. Here, curved geometry is not an imposition on the mountain’s form, but rather the result of a dialogue and negotiation with its contours. It preserves the mountain’s natural undulations while redefining the rhythm of walking on a human scale.

The most striking geometric feature of the Yanqian Trail is its winding, curved form ©微介设计

Geometry is a medium that reveals the beauty of nature ©微介设计

Here, geometry is not a tool for conquering nature, but a means of blending into it. Through geometric structural pathways, people achieve a “gentle touch” with nature—reaching it without harming it. When human rationality meets nature’s sensuous power on the Cloud Path, and when geometric order blends with the rhythm of the landscape as one walks, “geometric nature” transforms from an abstract concept into the path beneath one’s feet, the scenery before one’s eyes, and the poetry within one’s heart.

    Exploring Nature

“Some landscapes are meant to be traversed, some to be admired, and some to be explored…”

    — Guo Xi (Song Dynasty), <The Lofty Ambitions of the Forest and Springs>

The Yanqian Trail is approximately 1,310 meters long (a reference to the number 1,314, symbolizing “a lifetime of love”), and its elevated structure winds along the mountainside, gently wrapping around the mountain like a flowing ribbon. The design maximizes the protection of the mountain’s native vegetation and animal habitats while striving to achieve harmony and coexistence between humans and nature. As visitors walk along the Cloud Path, their vantage point is gently elevated. Looking north, they can take in classic landmarks such as the peaks of Qixingyan and the Wulong Pavilion; looking east, they can overlook the cityscape of Duanzhou, enjoying a unique panorama where mountains, lakes, the city, and forests harmoniously come together.

The “cloud” in Cloud Path refers not only to the physical elevation but also to a state of spiritual detachment; walking along the Cloud Path is a process of elevating one’s physical perspective. When one strolls among the clouds and looks down upon the Qixingyan Scenic Area, the contours of the landscape resonate with the imagery within one’s heart, and only then does nature truly undergo a transformation from a “thing in its own right” to a “scene created for me.” This may be the deepest insight offered by the Yanqian Trail: the finest landscape design does not merely allow people to “see” nature, but teaches them to “observe” nature—through the interplay of walking and pausing, of looking up and looking down, thereby fostering a profound dialogue between humanity and the landscape.

In short, the installation of the Yanqian Trail has transformed Xianggang from a remote hilltop—once the site of an ancient village that had lain dormant for a thousand years—into a trendy, eco-friendly “green oasis” where people and nature coexist in harmony. Not only does it allow local residents to “see greenery whenever they look up and enjoy scenic views the moment they step outside,” but it also offers visitors from afar a brand-new perspective from which to stroll through the air and take in the poetic beauty of Xinghu Lake.

    Scenery in Motion

“The Mountains Shift with Every Step,” “The Mountains Reveal New Views at Every Turn”

    — Guo Xi (Song Dynasty), <The Lofty Ambitions of the Forest and Springs>

The perspective determines the context of observation. From the conceptual stage, the design of the Cloud Path’s route transcended the simple function of spatial connection, evolving into a multidimensional spatial language that embodies structure, rhythm, and scenery. On a physical level, the path connects vistas of varying heights and directions through a narrative logic of introduction, development, transition, and conclusion, serving as the structural framework that underpins the overall spatial layout. Visually, the varying densities and openings of the paths effectively guide the ebb and flow of visitors’ emotions and rhythms. Every turn and opening carries the evolving experience of the visitor’s journey. Yet when visitors reach the summit of Xianggang, the vista is entirely different—they can see both the bustling urban scene and, in the distance, classic vistas within the Qixingyan Scenic Area, such as Xinghu Lake, the mountain peaks, and the Wulong Pavilion. This meticulous design is not intended to alter nature, but rather to allow the viewer to better perceive nature’s inherent qualities. It is only when visitors, as they move through the shifting vistas, capture the fleeting moments of morning and evening sunlight or the glow of the sunset reflecting on the lake that the true beauty of nature is truly “revealed.”

The transformation of Xianggang Mountain extends far beyond the Cloud Path; the “Xianggang Station · Mirror of the Sky,” located at the path’s highest point, serves as the culmination of the entire Cloud Path’s aesthetic vision. The architectural design of Xianggang Station draws inspiration from a jade disc, featuring a circular layout and adhering to the principles of openness and transparency in its spatial design. The main building has a floor area of 795.32 square meters and stands 15 meters tall. The design principles prioritized avoiding the existing ancestral graves, geological hazard sites, and large trees on the mountaintop. The building’s highest point is kept below the height of the treetops, effectively preventing the structure from standing out too prominently and ensuring its harmonious integration with the surrounding environment. The ground floor is constructed as an open, elevated space; the second floor features a fully open, circular indoor observation deck that doubles as an interactive rest area; The third-floor outdoor viewing cantilevered platform serves as the station’s signature space, “Mirror of the Sky.” The platform offers views toward the Qixingyan Scenic Area and establishes a distinctive regional identity for the main building. Through a “light-touch” landscape construction approach, Xianggang Station integrates the main structure into the natural environment as much as possible, allowing it to “disappear” into the mountains and forests, embodying a design philosophy of “minimal intervention, maximum experience.”

While ensuring the overall harmony of Xianggang, the platform’s prime viewing spot has been positioned toward the northwest to guarantee an unobstructed view within a 160°–180° field of vision. This design allows visitors to better appreciate the scenery of the Qixingyan Scenic Area, maximizing their viewing experience and providing an open, comfortable visual experience. At the same time, it blends seamlessly with the natural environment, enhancing the sense of immersion and depth. In addition to the top-floor observation deck at Yanqian Station, which offers a perfect view of Qixingyan—this marvel of Lingnan—from an ideal height, the circular structure on the second floor allows visitors to take in the surrounding scenery. Here, visitors can view Qixingyan up close, survey Xinghu Lake, and gaze toward Beiling in the distance.

On the top floor of the building, facing Qixingyan, a cantilevered viewing platform has been added; its overhanging design further ensures unobstructed views. The platform’s floor is covered with mirrored glass, which reflects the sky and the surrounding environment, creating a dreamlike experience as if one were floating above Star Lake—a sight that stirs the soul and delights the eyes.

The Xianggang Station is designed to serve as a comprehensive service center offering a variety of services, including reception, exhibitions, leisure, and scenic viewing. The interior of the building has been planned to accommodate these diverse service needs, divided into several independent functional zones to ensure that each function complements the others and to optimize the spatial layout.

    结语
    Conclusion

The project was designed against the backdrop of Guangdong Province’s high-quality development of urban and rural landscapes and the promotion of the “Green and Beautiful Guangdong” initiative. Through an elevated ecological skywalk, Xianggang Mountain has been transformed from a “wild” hill—the site of an ancient village that has lain dormant for a thousand years—into a modern ecological scenic area where humans and nature coexist in harmony. The significance of the Yanqian Trail project lies in its spatial development model that practices “ecological light touch” and “reawakening the wild.” It explores how, at the interface between traditional villages and nature reserves, maximum socio-ecological benefits can be achieved through minimal physical intervention, thereby fundamentally reshaping the structural relationship between “people, nature, and villages.” The completion and operation of Yanqian Trail have injected new momentum and visitor traffic into the original traditional village, while also boosting media attention and offering fresh perspectives for the existing national-level scenic area. Since its opening, Yanqian Trail has quickly become a popular destination, attracting approximately 66,000 visitors during the 2026 New Year’s Day holiday alone to explore and “check in.”
