The project is located in Potouxu, Zhanjiang, in western Guangdong Province. The client, the Zhang family, sought to build a multi-generational residential villa that carries forward the family motto “Dao Zai Lunchang” (The Way Lies in Human Ethics), transforming the architecture into a vessel for the transmission of family values and ancestral rituals.

场地回应与街巷肌理缝合
Site Response and Urban Fabric Integration

宅基地位于新旧交织的岭南圩镇街区，周边既有老旧民居的砖墙肌理，也有自发形成的街巷尺度。设计并未采用割裂场地的先锋形式，而是以红砖材料为媒介，实现与街区肌理的视觉缝合：立面通体采用与传统民居同源的红砖材料，以砖红色调呼应周边建筑的色彩基底，消解了现代建筑与旧街区的视觉冲突。同时，建筑通过体块的退台与悬挑，主动适配街巷的空间尺度 —— 底层局部架空退让出边界模糊的灰空间，打破了建筑与街道的刚性分隔，延续了岭南圩镇 “街巷即公共客厅” 的生活场景，使建筑成为街区肌理的有机延伸，而非突兀的 “闯入者”。

The site sits within a Lingnan market-town block where old and new converge, surrounded by vernacular brick-wall dwellings and organically formed streetscapes. Rather than adopting an avant-garde form that would rupture the existing fabric, the design uses red brick as a mediating material to achieve visual continuity with the neighbourhood. The entire facade is clad in red brick sourced from the same tradition as the surrounding vernacular architecture; its uniform reddish tone echoes the chromatic base of the adjacent buildings, dissolving the visual conflict between modern construction and the old quarter. Through setbacks and cantilevers, the massing actively responds to the scale of the streets: the partially elevated ground floor yields a blurred semi-outdoor transitional space that breaks down the rigid boundary between building and street, continuing the Lingnan ethos of “the street as public living room.” In this way, the architecture becomes an organic extension of the neighbourhood fabric rather than an intrusive outsider.

气候适应性的空间与表皮策略
Climate-Responsive Spatial and Envelope Strategies

针对岭南地区炎热多雨、日照强烈的气候特征，建筑采用了被动式气候适应性设计逻辑。在空间层面，通过层层出挑的楼板形成连续的立面阴影区，有效降低夏季太阳辐射对墙体的直接照射，减少建筑得热；立面大小错落的开窗，结合内部天井的穿堂风组织，实现自然通风降温，无需依赖主动式设备即可优化室内热环境。在表皮层面，红砖砌体的多孔结构具备良好的热惰性，可缓冲室外温度波动对室内的影响；同时，悬挑楼板与黑色窗框的组合，强化了立面的阴影层次，既提升了建筑的形式张力，也通过光影变化弱化了砖材立面的单调感，实现了气候功能与形式美学的统一。

In response to the hot, rainy climate with intense solar exposure characteristic of Lingnan, the building employs a passive climatic design logic. At the spatial level, staggered cantilevered floor slabs create continuous facade shading zones that effectively reduce direct summer solar radiation on the walls, minimising heat gain. Varied window apertures, combined with cross-ventilation through the interior courtyard, enable natural cooling without reliance on active mechanical systems. At the envelope level, the porous structure of the red-brick masonry provides substantial thermal inertia, buffering indoor temperatures against outdoor fluctuations. The combination of cantilevered slabs and dark-framed windows further accentuates the facade’s shadow patterns, enhancing formal tension while mitigating the visual monotony of the brick surface through chiaroscuro, achieving an integration of climatic performance and formal aesthetics.

层级化的空间秩序建构
Hierarchical Spatial Ordering

建筑采用 “开放 – 过渡 – 私密” 的层级化空间组织模式，回应圩镇生活的公共性与私密性需求：底层为半开放的公共界面，通过架空灰空间与街道形成互动，承载邻里交往、社区活动的功能；中层为过渡性居住空间，悬挑阳台与通透玻璃窗实现了室内与街巷景观的视觉连通，同时以红砖墙体保障居住的私密性；顶层体块收束并采用斜向红砖屋面，既呼应了传统民居坡屋顶的在地意象，也为顶层空间塑造了独特的光影体验，形成从公共到私密、从开放到内敛的完整空间序列。

The building adopts a “public-transitional-private” hierarchical spatial organisation that addresses the dual demands of communal and domestic life in the market-town context. The ground floor functions as a semi-public interface, engaging the street through the elevated transitional space and accommodating neighbourly interaction and community activity. The middle floors serve as transitional residential zones, where cantilevered balconies and full-height glazing create visual connectivity between interior and streetscape while the red-brick walls safeguard privacy. The upper volume is condensed and crowned with an angled red-brick roof that echoes the local vernacular pitched-roof typology, crafting distinctive light and shadow experiences for the topmost spaces. Together, these layers compose a complete spatial sequence from public to private, from extroversion to introversion.

红砖与混凝土的对话
Dialogue Between Red Brick and Concrete: Materiality as Narrative

红砖与混凝土两种材料的并置策略，形成传统与现代的建构张力。红砖并非单纯的装饰性表皮，而是参与了建筑空间秩序的建构。混凝土构件（楼板、梁柱）以清晰的结构逻辑暴露于建筑中，展现了现代建筑的建造技术；而红砖砌体则以其粗糙的肌理与暖调质感，柔化了混凝土的冷硬感。两种材料通过交接构造节点的精细化设计，实现了结构与装饰肌理的一气呵成。

The juxtaposition of red brick and concrete generates a constructive tension between tradition and modernity. Red brick is not merely a decorative skin but an active participant in the spatial ordering of the architecture. Concrete elements — floor slabs and beams — are expressed with clear structural logic, demonstrating modern construction technology, while the red-brick masonry softens concrete’s cold rigidity with its rough texture and warm tonality. Through meticulously detailed junctions, structure and surface achieve a seamless unity.

从物理容器到文化载体
From Physical Container to Cultural Vessel

建筑在满足居住价值之外，同时完成了场所精神的承载，实现乡土文脉的当代传承。通过对公共性的激活、集体记忆的物质化，完成了从居住容器到文化载体的转化。底层架空的灰空间并非消极的过渡区域，而是被激活为社区公共生活的媒介。这一空间延续了岭南圩镇 “骑楼”“檐下空间” 的公共性特质，成为邻里交往、日常活动的场所 —— 门前的休憩座椅、节庆张贴的春联，使建筑的边界成为社区生活的延伸。这种设计打破了现代住宅的封闭性，让建筑从私人居住容器，转变为维系社区关系的公共节点，为圩镇街区注入了新的活力。

Beyond fulfilling its residential programme, the architecture assumes the role of a spiritual place-maker, accomplishing the contemporary transmission of vernacular culture. By activating publicness and materialising collective memory, the building transforms from a mere dwelling into a cultural vessel.The elevated semi-outdoor space on the ground floor is not a passive transition zone but an activated medium for communal life. Continuing the Lingnan traditions of the arcade and the eaves-space, it becomes a setting for neighbourly exchange and daily activity — the resting bench by the door, the festive spring couplets — extending the building’s boundary into the realm of community life. This approach dissolves the enclosure of contemporary residential architecture, converting the private dwelling into a public node that sustains social relations and injects new vitality into the market-town block.

该红砖建筑以谦逊的姿态嵌入圩镇街区，既没有通过夸张的形式彰显 “现代性”，也没有以仿古的姿态复刻传统，而是以朴素的材质为媒介，传递出 “扎根于场地” 的建筑态度。它向使用者证明：乡土文脉无需刻意标榜，也能在现代生活中自然生长；传统材料并非落后的符号，而是可以适配现代建造逻辑、承载当代生活需求的文化载体。这种态度最终转化为场所的精神内核，让建筑成为圩镇街区文化自信的具象表达，实现了从物理空间到家风精神的传承。

Embedded in the fabric with humility, the building neither asserts “modernity” through exaggerated form nor replicates tradition through pastiche. Instead, it communicates an attitude of “rootedness in place” through its honest materiality. It demonstrates to its inhabitants that vernacular culture needs no deliberate proclamation to thrive in contemporary life, and that traditional materials are not symbols of backwardness but cultural media capable of serving modern construction logic and contemporary living. This attitude ultimately crystallises as the spiritual core of the place, rendering the architecture a tangible expression of cultural confidence within the market-town block and completing the passage from physical space to the spiritual inheritance of family values.
