The project is located on the north bank of Zhangjiatanggang River, where a vehicular bridge and a landscaped pedestrian bridge span the waterway. Since its full opening in 2017, the Huangpu River waterfront has become a defining element of Shanghai’s urban image.

Unlike the polished and bustling atmosphere of the city center, the riverfront near Zhangjiatanggang Bridge retains a more local and everyday character. Nearby residents often gather here for exercise, socializing, and square dancing, especially between 4 PM and 8 PM. The project is located on the north bank of Zhangjiatanggang River, where a vehicular bridge and a landscaped pedestrian bridge span the waterway.

The broad vehicular bridge casts a deep shadow over the site, while a floodwall obstructs access beneath it. Although the pedestrian bridge was intended to connect riverside routes, its access points are set far from the water and are therefore often overlooked by passersby. The space beneath the bridge is relatively low, with a minimum clearance of only about 2.2 meters, making it unsuitable for large-scale public events. Yet by guiding people over the floodwall, the old Hongwen Paper Mill Bridge, built in 1986, can become a key connector that completes the riverside walkway. As part of the 2023 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, the project was conceived as a public installation with a limited budget and tight schedule. At the same time, it presented an opportunity to extend beyond the building control line and contribute public space back to the city.

Late in the afternoon, the sunlight enters the space under bridge and casts a slit of light on the ground, bringing vitality to the dark. It is a crack between the bridge and the flood wall that allows sunlight to enter. This crack is formed by the spatial discrepancy between the elevated bridge structure and the flood wall. This crack runs parallel to the flood wall, it is 4.2-meter-wide, 4.15-meter-high and 30-meter-long. We also need to keep a 6-meter-wide flood control channel with no coverage beside the wall according to the regulations.

The space beneath the bridge is relatively low, with a minimum clearance of only about 2.2 meters, making it unsuitable for large-scale public events. Responding to the existing site conditions, the design adopts a strategy of light intervention, guiding people over the flood wall and creating a new public route and spatial experience. A series of steps and ramp were set to connect platforms of different heights and guide people over the flood wall. In response to the existing atmosphere, we set a connection to stimulate relevant public activities: the steps become audience area of the dance floor under bridge, and another part becomes a stage on the other side of the flood wall.

    Dance Floor, Steps, Stage

A series of steps and ramp were set to connect platforms of different heights and guide people over the flood wall. In response to the existing atmosphere, we set a connection to stimulate relevant public activities: the steps become audience area of the dance floor under bridge, and another part becomes a stage on the other side of the flood wall. On the east side of the crack, the overhead heavy concrete structure seems near at hand. The slightly concave bottom surface of the beam produces a good sound reflection. Not far from the bridge, people always dance and rehearse musical instruments. Therefore, we conceived a dance floor under the bridge with a series of steps as the audience area. A curved steel rail, on which are wires of the lights, enhances the visual enclosure of the dance floor. In addition, we made the lights flash to the tempo of the music. When colorful lights are reflected by the concrete surface, there is a small fancy world under bridge.

On the west side of the crack, there is a vacant space owned by the government, and the former factory here has been completely demolished. Standing here looking back, the concrete structure of Zhangjiatang Bridge offers a clean background. To keep the flood control channel clear, we designed a 6-meter-wide stage of the same width to it. As a result, pedestrians on the bridge can stop to enjoy the performance on the stage at any time.

    后记
    Afterword

Walking along the river to the stage, you can enjoy the wind, hear the insects, even come across friendly dogs in the pocket park sometimes. Nature permeates the infrastructure and merges with the artifacts. And the way people act seems to be the same as they are in nature. Nature permeates the infrastructure and merges with the artifacts.

The secondary industry has completely disappeared in the inner city of Shanghai. With the migration of the manufacture to the suburbs or great beyond, Shanghai’s urban space has become increasingly exquisite and gentrified, which makes the experience along the riverside so valuable. The experience also brings a sense of relaxation and freedom that is familiar, coarse, and specific. I believe it must be shaped by the wide river, the large-scale infrastructure, and the still wild nature. I believe it must be shaped by the wide river, the large-scale infrastructure, and the still wild nature.
