Moonrise takes its name from the fleeting moment when the moon appears on the horizon—an event that transforms the familiar landscape into something quietly magical. At once tangible and ethereal, the moon has always held a tantalising presence over the human imagination. The recent Artemis II space expedition dared to venture to the dark side of the moon, taking one step further than any previous effort and bringing back dazzling images of its surface.

In a park in Tennessee, Moonrise embodies this same spirit of adventure, inviting visitors to step beneath an otherworldly form that feels both grounded and dreamlike. The dome creates an immersive public experience: a place for gathering, rest, and reflection where the limits between art, architecture, and atmosphere dissolve. Its organic curves filter daylight into shifting patterns of shadow, encouraging visitors to slow down, look up, and inhabit the moment. At once intimate and open, Moonrise fosters a shared yet personal encounter, transforming an everyday park visit into a moment of collective imagination.

This adventurous character extends equally to the project’s design and construction. Inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s philosophy of “doing more with less,” dome structures, until recently, were constrained by their structural efficiency, limiting their aesthetic and formal possibilities. Moonrise goes one step further, reinterpreting these principles through computational design and fabrication techniques. The precise coordination of form, structure, and fabrication allows the structure to explore new expressive possibilities while remaining efficient in resource use.

The dome is composed of a double-layer shell formed by a series of custom-fabricated aluminium structural strips, each only 3 milimiters thick, meticulously assembled with rivets. This interlocking system produces a rigid, expansive structure with minimal material, achieving both lightness and strength.

As a permanent addition to Wheland Foundry Trailhead, Moonrise enhances the urban landscape by merging visual delight with responsible design. Balancing beauty, efficiency, and durability, the installation demonstrates how contemporary public art can be both environmentally conscious and experientially rich. More than a sculptural object, Moonrise serves as a civic space, offering the Chattanooga community a valuable place to pause, connect, and experience quiet wonder.
